Australia Day Website Black-out Protest Over Filter Plan

The West Australian – More than 500 Australian websites have blacked themselves out as part of an Australia Day protest against the Federal Government’s plan to introduce a mandatory internet filter. Critics say the Government’s plan, designed to censor public access to illegal or violent pornography, will affect ordinary web users while failing to achieve its aims. Peter Black, campaign manager for Electronic Frontiers Australia, which organised the protest, said thousands of Twitter, Facebook and MySpace users would also black out their profiles this week, as part of an event dubbed the “Great Australian Internet Blackout”.
